Mixed AFL. What do you think?

girls_footballThere’s an interesting debate going on today in the media in regards to should women be allowed to play AFL? With the boys, that is.

It’s actually quite a tricky topic, with many different opinions circling through my head.

Let me share them with you.

My first reaction was, well of course girls should be able to play AFL with the boys.

Then I thought, hang on, some of these AFL blokes, and we’re talking top grade here, are big and oh so very strong. And whether we girls like it or not, it’s a proven fact the mostly men are stronger than women.

So would we really like to see a chick take a hit from some big AFL dude? No, I don’t think I would actually.

Then someone on Sunrise made a very good point about women’s sport. If women were allowed to play with the guys how would that jeopardise women’s sport? Good point – I think it would actually take away from women’s sport, downgrading it even further than it already seems to be.

What do you think?

This will be my… 5th rewrite of this comment.. I don’t want to sound like a sexist pig of sorts but here goes… this applies to all contact sports..

The physical differences in terms of mostly strength and speed means that the women at professional levels will be completely outmatched by the men. Of course there will be exceptions but overall teams will always opt to choose a male over a female unless there was a minimum number of women rule.

Also, in the midst of the fray, if a male player were to grab a female in a way she didn’t find comfortable, would it be classed as sexual harrasment/assualt? Or will it be just a tackle? It will be hard to judge in the middle of a match.

And lastly, most contact sports have times when it’s all out violent chaos, I for one would not want to watch a woman cop a fist to the side of the head. And I reckon alot of people would agree with me. Viewer numbers on televised profressional games would drop and the clubs would start losing money.

If I sounded like a sexist bastard I apologise. I personally don’t see any benefit to mixing genders in certain sports.

I completely agree. Not only is the girl putting herself in a potential dangerous situation, but the guys could also find themselves in a tricky situation with harrasment etc as you mentioned.

I’m all for girl power, but definitely don’t think this is the right way to go about it. Maybe more support for female sport would be a good start.

I think with the standards that society sets these days, especially morally, there is just no way you could mix the genders, no matter how good or how capable the female is at that sport.
As you suggest Ami more support for females sports is the best way to bring the male female codes closer together.

I agree that female sports need more support.. but the truth of the matter is it’s the male sports that generate the money, so most female sports are stuck to being shown at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon on the ABC.
